I really enjoyed doing the photo session with Jennifer and Tom. I'd met Jennifer some time ago, through some photography we'd done for her employer. Was my first time to meet her husband, Tom. Sometimes guys can be a little difficult to work with, especially doing maternity sessions. But Tom was great to work with. It was a really fun session, and we got a nice variety of some really cool photos! Thanks, Jennifer and Tom! Can't wait to meet little Elaina!

You don't need a Session Name/ID" for events.
A couple inches below the "Email Address" and "Session Name/ID" box, you'll see the list of current online events. Click the event name. You will then be asked to enter your email address. Now you'll be to the thumbnail photos.

Note: Events are posted online for 4 to 6 weeks. The special prices listed are good while photos are online. Once the photos are off line, you may still order, but at regular event prices. Photo ordered online will be ready in about 1 week.

At the top left of the thumbnail page, you'll see four words:
Browse....brings you back to the thumbnail page.
Favorites.....Brings up your list of favorite images. When viewing individual photos, click the "Heart" icon to add the image to your favorites.

High School Senior Formal Portrait Days.

September 13-16, Tuesday-Friday, we will be doing formal senior portraits at the studio in Oak Grove. These will be the traditional, “senior portraits” with a classic background. There will be no session fee to do one outfit. Special package prices begin at just $60. Or you can purchase the digital file with a copyright license to print your own photos, for just $75.
As times are changing, we know many seniors have friends or relatives do their senior portraits. But often they end up without a really nice traditional portrait. Sometimes a formal portrait will be taken at school, but often times you are rushed through and the results are less than you’d hoped.

Eurekan Bicycle Ride Route, August 13

Want to know where you can see the largest group of road cyclists to ever bike in Carroll County? On August 13, over 300 cyclists will take to the roads in our area as part of the http://eurekasportsfestival.com/. The 3 day event will feature a triathlon on Friday, the 12th, at Holiday Island. Sunday will be running events in Eureka Springs. But the big event I'm excited about is the bicycle rides and races on August 13th. I've been working with the evening organizers, helping to set up the aid stations. These are located about every 20 miles or so, for the "tour" riders to stop and enjoy refreshments....GatorAid, fruit, energy gels, or some of the many home-made treats that have been donated by area residents. Don't be looking for the racers to stop, they will be flying through and just grabbing a water bottle from road-side helpers.

PLEASE BE CAREFUL DRIVING THAT DAY, TO HELP MAKE THIS A SAFE EVENT!!!!!
I've had a few people ask when the riders would be coming by their homes. Here's a description of the routes, followed by a listing of what time to expect them.
There will be 3 races and 3 "tours". The racers do not stop! The "tour" group will be stopping at the rest stops.

The 68 Mile Racer's Route.
Leaves Eureka Springs at 6:00, and head to Berryville on hwy 62.
Berryville square: 6:30, then to Green Forest.
Arrive Green Forest 6:55-7:00. Will turn left on 103 to Oak Grove.
Arrive Oak Grove, 7:25-7:35, turn left on 21 to Berryville.
Arrive 21/221 junction, 8:00-8:10, turns right to Carr Lane, the left on 86 to Golden.
Arrive Golden 8:40-8:55, continue on 86.
Turn left to Eureka Springs on 23, 8:55-9:10.
Holiday Island, 9:15-9:30
Finish line at courthouse in Eureka Springs, 9:30-9:45.

Family Portrait Special - Support MS Research

September 17-18, Larry will be participating in a MS150 bicycle ride. This 2 day, 150 mile bike ride is to raise money for multiple sclerosis research.

Lockhart - O'Brien Wedding

On June 18th, we photographed the wedding of Kyla Lockhart and Kyle O'Brien. We've done photos for the Lockhart family for many years, including some of Kyla in her younger years and senior portraits.
Kyla and Kyle met while attending college at Union University in Jackson, Tennessee. The setting for their wedding was the Riverwood Mansion in Nashville, Tennessee.
The weather looked a bit threatening early in the day, but by late afternoon the rain clouds had moved out and the weather was nice for the outdoor ceremony.
I was glad to have Kelly assist me in photographing the wedding.

The Smith Family

If you don't know any of these folks, I'll bet you've not been around Berryville, Arkansas very much.
A couple weeks I enjoyed doing a family portrait session for the Ralph Smith family. We appreciate the support of their family. We've done weddings, senior portraits, children's portraits, and family photos for them over the years.
I often get my hair cut by Marian, Leah, or one of their staff at "A Cut Above" in Berryville. Ralph's business is "Ralph Smith, Yardsmith". He has done some landscaping for us at the studio.
Thanks for letting us create these lasting memories for you!

First Session At New Branson Office

We now have an office in Branson!
We don't have as many backgrounds or props in the camera room as we do in Oak Grove, but we do have a few. There are many great spots for outdoor portraits in the area. Plus we also enjoy personalizing a session by photographing in a location that has a special meaning to you, such as your home, or in this case, the family farm.
The new office is located in the lower level of the Dr. Tallon's Branson Dental Center at 515 Bee Creek Road. Hours are by appointment only. We invite you to give us a call to set up a time for a consultation and let's discuss the options!

Travis and JoBeth's Wedding

On June 4th, I traveled to Goshen (just east of Fayetteville) to the "Stone Chapel at Matt-Lane Farm" for the wedding of JoBeth Williams and Travis Evans. We first got acquainted with JoBeth when we photographed her high school senior portraits a few years ago.
It was a wonderful wedding! Beautiful bride, cooperative groom, everyone arrived on time, picturesque venue, and just generally a great group of people to work with! It was a happy occasion!

The Smith Twins

This was a special session for me, the twin sons of David and Janetta Smith. I grew up around Janetta's mom and grand parents, guess I'm sort of triple related to Janetta. My dad and her grand father are double cousins. And I'm also a bit related on her dad's side.
This was Avery and Emmit's first studio session. What a delight!

This was our first really good photo of all 6 of the grand babies. You can't imagine how difficult it is to get a good photo of that many, under age 4, together! But thanks to Kelly's Photoshop talents, we ended up with this winner!

JoBeth and Travis Engagement Session

Except for cool temperatures, everything was perfect for JoBeth and Travis' engagement session on Saturday, April 16th. The setting was Withrow Springs State Park, located between Eureka Springs and Huntsville. The dogwoods were in bloom and the other colors of spring are beginning to appear.
We first met JoBeth a few years ago when we did her senior portraits. They were a fun couple to work with, so I'm looking forward to their June wedding!

Retirement Reception for Jerry Stokes

On my 18th birthday, I first went to Lawrence Photo in Springfield and bought a darkroom kit. Jerry Stokes had been working there for 2 months.
A few months later, as a naive teenager, I decided to buy a camera to photograph weddings. I went to Lawrence Photo and talked to Jerry. Told him I wanted a Yashica Mat 124-G medium format camera. He told me that for weddings, I needed at least a Mamiya C-220. He was right.
A few months later, I was having problems with it winding. I took the camera back, Jerry checked it out, then said, "It shouldn't do that". And he grabbed another off the shelf and said, "Take this one".
Then a few years later, I needed a new flash. Again, he told me the one I was looking at was not a real pro model, and again, he was right.
On the eve of photographing Benjamin Netanyahu at the College of the Ozarks, I had a tripod collapse. The whole camera and lens went into a creek, totally ruining it. That was early evening. I called Jerry at home, asked if he had another in stock. Yes, he did. So I asked, "What time do you open in the morning?". His reply, "Come on up now and we'll go down to the store and get it". He opened the store for me at 10:00pm that night.
Going to miss him, but have a GREAT retirement Jerry. I'll be checking on you!

Introducing Miss Abigail (Abby) Jo Dwyer

On April 7th, we welcomed our 6th grand child into the world. Abby Jo Dwyer is the second daughter of our daughter, Kelly, and her husband Keith. They also have another daughter, Reagan, who is the oldest of our grand kids. Reagan turned 3 in December. Our other grand kids are Ian (age 3), Cora (will be 2 next month), Dakota (6 months), and Quinn (also 6 months).
Going to be interesting taking that first group photo of all 6!

Mark and Kory's Wedding

On Saturday evening, April 9th, I photographed the wedding of Mark Houser and Kory Perkins. The wedding ceremony was at the Southern Heights Baptist Church in Berryville, with the reception following at the Carroll County Country Club.
Kory is actually a distant cousin of mine. I didn't know until a few years ago, that possibly she and my Grandma Shahan could have been named after the same person. Kory's great grandmother, Cordellia (spelling???) Garner and my great grand mother, Adeline Atchley, were sisters. Kory's dad, Joe, told me that people called his grandma "Cory", so that's who they named "Kory" after. My grandma was named "Cora". I'm just assuming she might have been named after he aunt, Kory's great grandmother.
The name goes on in our family, as I have a grand daughter, Cora Jayne Loper!

Zac and Tessa's Wedding

On Friday, April 8th, we photographed the wedding of Zac Van Conett and Tessa Legleiter at Thorncrown Chapel in Eureka Springs. A reception followed at the Best Western Eureka Inn. The wedding was originally planned April 16th, but the military had other plans for Zac on that day, so the wedding was moved up a week.
A big "Thank You" for letting me be a part of your special day!

Mr. and Mrs. Winfred Prier Celebrate 50th Wedding Anniversary

On Saturday night, April 2nd, I had the pleasure of photographing a surprise wedding anniversary party for Mr. and Mrs. Winfred Prier of Golden, Missouri. The event was held at the Holiday Island Club House.
The Prier's children invited friends and family, and were able to keep the reception a surprise for their parents.
It was very interesting to hear stories that were shared by those in attendance. It was obvious the Priers are people that have raise their family and managed a successful business by following good values.
The Priers have owned and operated Ball and Prier Tire in Golden, Missouri for over 50 years. Also, Mr. Prier has been a board member of the Carroll Electric Cooperative for many years.

President George W. Bush will speak on “Leadership and Character” at College of the Ozarks at Point Lookout, Missouri on April 7 in the Keeter Athletic Complex. We are excited as Larry will be one of the main photographers hired to document the event for the college. Larry has been photographing special events for College of the Ozarks for over 20 years, which has included visits by such notables as Sarah Palin, Newt Gingrich, Ben Stein, Tom Brokaw, General Colin Powell, President Gerald Ford, Lady Margaret Thatcher, and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

I have to remind myself of that time and time again. Yes, we all want to save money and not pay too much. But how often do we get sucked in by the, "It's almost as good as ??????, just cheaper"?
Year ago when I bought my first 35mm camera. A good pro quality Canon at that time cost $600. However they had a much cheaper consumer version for just $200. So I bought that one. I was disappointed. Didn't do what I'd hoped. I ended up buying the $600 camera, which was still working great the last time I used it! It did the job!
Well, I did it again. Last month, I was needing another digital camera. Mine were getting several "miles" on them, and I just felt I needed to update to some newer equipment. With George Bush to photograph next month at CofO, I definitely wanted to make sure I had top-notch, reliable equipment.
After reading reviews, I thought I was onto something. A new top-level prosumer (the word they use combining "pro" and "consumer") camera was on the market. Half the price of the regular pro camera, and capable of doing pro work. The newest technology. So I thought I'd try it. Besides, I could buy 2 of them for the price of the pro camera, and still have money left over.
Well, it was an ok camera, made pretty files. But just not a pro level camera. Focus was a little inconsistent, something I don't tolerate very well. So I broke down and bought a true, pro-level camera, the Nikon D700. After a half day of shooting, I can already tell I'm going to love this new camera!

2011 NAIA Division II Men's Basketball National Championship, College of the Ozarks, Opening Ceremony

For the past several years, I've had the pleasure of photographing the NAIA Division II Men's Basketball National Championship. College of the Ozarks has hosted the tournament since 2000.
Thirty two teams are competing. Colleges from as far away as California, Oregon, Washington State, Florida, Michigan, and Ohio have teams represented at the tournament.

Montana Myer....future basketball star???

Each year, we do photos of Montana and each of his brothers around their birthday. We try to use a theme that says something about their current interest. Montana is a basketball player. I try to do something different each year. I usually photograph Montana either in the studio, or in our portrait park area. But this time, we went on-location and did his session on a basketball court.
I've not gotten to see him play, but from his height, I'd say he does ok.
This is a composite that Kelly created for Montana.

On Thursday evening, March 3, I traveled to Bentonville to present a program to the Photographic Society of Northwest Arkansas. Over 50 members were in attendance.
The presentation included the showing of various types of work we do, with emphasis on creating better portrait lighting.

April Wedding

In April, we will be photographing the wedding of Kory and Mark. I have done several photos of Kory over the years. She is actually a somewhat distant cousin. Our great-grandmothers were sisters. I'm not sure, but I think possibly she and my grandmother were named after the same person. Kory's great-grandmother's name was Cordelia (forgive me if I spelled that wrong). I was told, some people called her "Kory". My grandma Shahan's name was "Cora" (actually, both my grandma's names were Cora....Cora Shahan and Cora Plumlee). We also have a grand daughter named Cora!
I always feel honored to be a part of such a special day!
Congratulations, Kory and Mark! I look forward to capturing the special moments of your wedding!

Commercial Photography: St John's Hospital

Being in a small, rural area, I can't really specialize in just one type of photography. But I sort of like that. I get to do a variety of things, so that keeps things interesting.
Occasionally we do commercial photography. "Commercial photography" is generally defined as taking photos that are to be used in ads or promotional purposes.
Over the past year, I've done a few jobs for St John's hospital. Below is a couple of the photos, and the ad layout created by St John's. I've done a lot of photography for both of these families over the years, Mr Schell and the Gordon's. I was photographing Kristin when she was the age of her kids!

Senior Portrait Road Trip, Day Five: New York City

Our final destination site for the trip was New York City. I'd never been to NYC, never really had a desire to go. But after visiting, would love to go back! Wasn't really what I expected.
This was our longest day of photography. We headed out mid morning and didn't return to our hotel room until sometime before mid night.

Someone bit into their morning pastry, and it sort of had an odd texture. Turning it over, there was a piece of wax paper on the bottom...lol.

Rest stops along the interstate had a good choice of foods.

A city bus picked us up about a block from our hotel room, in Secaucus, NJ, dropping us off at a subway terminal in NYC.

Senior Portrait Road Trip, Day Four: Washington D.C.

Day Four was an interesting day. Neither Lajunta or I have ever been to Washington D.C, so this was a day of adventure for all of us.

Breakfast a Panera Bread.

Our first stop of the day was Arlington National Cemetery.

"We met an old friend of Delisa's for dinner. He works in DC. Was an interesting guy to visit with (he's an avid cyclist!). Both he and Delisa are the children of deaf parents, and tend to talk with their hands a lot".

The mall still had up their 4th of July decorations. Anyone who knows Lajunta, knows she is very patriotic.

Chelsea and Kimberlie had fun wherever we went, even checking in at hotels. Our bellman's name was Darrell, but they pronounced it "du REL", after a character on Saturday Night Live.

Senior Portrait Road Trip, Day Three: Niagara Falls to Washington D.C.

We had several miles to cover today, so we began early. We returned to Niagara Falls for a daylight visit, then headed south towards Washington D.C. I was surprised at the vast amount of timberland in New York as we drove through the country side. There was no good, direct interstate route to follow today, but it was a pleasant drive through rural New York and Pennsylvania (no taking photos of "Welcome to our State" signs today!).

An elevator took you down closer to the river. You could buy (or borrow) a rain coat to get a closer look at the falls. I didn't want to get my camera equipment wet, so I stayed back a distance.

This tour boat departs from the Canada side of the river and takes tourists for an up close look at the falls. Notice they all have on rain coats.

One thing I was a bit surprised at was the other tourists, not from the USA, but from all over the globe. The girls got to visiting with this group, found out they were from Italy. They claimed to be cousins.

I guess you have to watch for snowmobiles crossing.

One of several small towns we drove through.

Many of the houses we seen today were shaped like these......two story, not too wide, but deep. Roofs were much steeper than we see here in Arkansas and there was a minimal width of soffit. I'd assume it's because of large snow falls. Someone told me, some of these houses had a window on the upper floor, that can be used as a door, in case the snow gets that deep!

We had a good laugh that evening when we checked into our rooms in Washington D.C. Delisa had booked a suite for her and the girls. Lajunta and I were to get a room with a king size bed. We accidentally got the keys switched. I opened the door to what I thought was our room and Lajunta gasped, "There's no bed!"
